Daisy Roberts, from Hub Cycle, gets ready to celebrate winter with Truro's annual Long John Festival.

TRURO – The annual Long John Festival to celebrate winter begins today, Feb. 15, and runs until Feb. 19.

The Town of Truro’s Parks, Recreation and Culture department is hosting the event, with a contest of ‘Go for the Golden Long John’, a take on the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Individuals or teams can participate in the contest by simply submitting their photos using the hashtag #LongJohnTruro. Full contest details as well as the schedule are on the Parks, Recreation and Culture Facebook page and at www.truro.ca/programs-and-events.

Each year, the goal of the Truro Winter Long John Festival is to get participants active with a wide variety of winter activities.

The festival kick off will include two marquee events. The United Way will hold a sold-out “Soup Fest” fundraiser at the Truro Farmer’s Market from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The opening ceremonies will be held at the Caldwell-Roach/King’s Mutual Insurance Ice Surface from 5:30 to 8 p.m., and feature entertainment by Paul Randy Mingo, horse and wagon rides courtesy of the Downtown Truro Partnership, and a welcome from Mayor Bill Mills.

On Feb. 16, residents are encouraged to wear their long johns for the day. Truro Mall will be hosting Elsa & Anna from Frozen, with a photo opportunity for kids from 5 to 7 p.m. A speed skating demonstration will be held at the Colchester Legion Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday’s schedule includes many events, such as an archery demonstration, and Family Fun Day at Forever Memories Equestrian Centre.

An all-ages mini-duathlon has been added on Feb. 18, as well as a sendoff celebration for the 2018 Canadian Junior Women’s Champions before they head off to the World Junior Curling Championship in Aberdeen, Scotland.

The festival wraps up on Feb. 19 with a pancake breakfast and sledding party at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26 and the closing ceremonies will be held from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at the Caldwell-Roach/King’s Mutual Insurance Ice Surface.

Ducky, a mini horse from Forever Memories Equestrian Centre, will be the festival ambassador – you may catch him at some of the events.

Full contest details and schedule are available on Facebook as well as the Town of Truro Programs and Events page.
