STEWIACKE: The Sunday Farmers’ Market won’t be the only thing opening this spring at Mastodon Ridge.
The annual farmers’ market will kick off for the season May 21 and will be open every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. until Thanksgiving. But before that, The Local Shop officially opens its doors on May 20.
The Local Shop will be open seven days a week until Christmas and feature a variety of products from local artisans and producers.
The new expansion of a seven-day a week store will complement other activities at Mastodon Ridge. The Winding River Art Gallery, relocated to the second level, offers artwork by local artisans and Coldstream Clear Distillery is a local spirit store offering a variety of locally made spirits.
“Farmers’ markets are an integral part of many communities across Nova Scotia and continue to be popular with consumers who appreciate the opportunity to purchase local produce, baked goods, locally distilled spirits and craft beers and arts and crafts directly from the producer,” said Market Co-ordinator Jamie Alcorn. “Local farmers’ markets provide positive experiences for both the customer and the vendor. Customers can ask direct questions about how an item is made or grown, thus providing an educational experience and a greater appreciation for the producer or artist. Vendors also get to share their passion for their products with their customers.”
Customers will enjoy the fun atmosphere of the Sunday Farmers’ Market and the opportunity to meet friends and neighbours from their community. Live, local music and a children’s craft area will be featured each Sunday. Visitors can also enjoy other features at Mastodon Ridge including mini golf, the children’s playground, hiking trails and delicious ice cream.
“We look forward to the opening of the Mastodon Market Store in May. In addition to the Sunday Farmers’ Market started last year, we are pleased to be opening a seven-day a week market store where we can offer more local products to our customers, as well as provide a space for artisans and producers to sell their products. We are excited about our new expansion,” says owner Bill Hay. “We have been developing Mastodon Ridge over the years and the addition of The Local Shop further enhances our Sunday Farmers’ Market and the amenities we already have at our location. Customers can expect to find fresh baked goods, local food, art work and other local items. We are pleased to support the ‘Buy Local’ community.”
