TRURO – Break out those ugly Christmas sweaters.
The Truro Run Tribe is hosting its sixth annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Run in support of the Christmas Index Program.
The run, which will be held at the TAAC Grounds on Dec. 3, will feature 5k and 8k runs, as well as a children’s mile, the latter of which is on the track. All proceeds will go to the Christmas Index Program, operated locally through the Rotary Club of Truro.
“I chose the Christmas Index Program originally – I don’t like to see children without a Christmas,” said Christine Bulk, who is one of the founding members of the Run Tribe. “I don’t like to see them wake up in the morning without a gift, and with an empty stomach.”
When she first brought up the charity, the members in the tribe were on board for their support. Last year, donations came in at $1,160.95, and Scotiabank’s Team Truro matched that amount, meaning they help out about half a dozen families. Team Truro will again be on site this year.
“The Christmas Index Program is more direct, more specialized,” Bulk added. “We could donate to cancer, for example, but that can be done year-round. Christmas is once a year.”
The tribe started the run as an alternative to travelling to the Halifax area for the Santa Shuffle, instead offering local runners the chance to support a cause at home. It’s grown each year, with about 70 participants last year.
This year, the hope is to raise $2,000, with 75 to 80 runners or walkers involved.
Thanks to a recent wellness grant through the Truro and Area Community Health Board, the Truro Run Tribe was able to purchase equipment, such as route signage, for the event. Other supplies, including door prizes, have been donated by local businesses.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the TAAC Grounds, with the children’s run at 8:30. The 5k and 8k options will begin at 9 a.m.
Participants are encouraged to dress in their ugliest Christmas sweater, or other Christmas items, and dogs are welcome to participate with their owners as well.
There will be food – including homemade soup, drinks and door prizes at the TAAC Grounds following the run.
